It all depends on the look you are going for.

Hair gel- gives you hold and creates that wet, stiff look

Hair Mousse- a styling aid used to create body and hold in a hair style

Wax- waxes come in all different types...they are mainly to add texture to give you that messy or pieced out look, some add shine

Hair Spray- its mainy used after styling to add hold to the finished style

The products you use depend on the hairstyle or look you are going for. If you had long curly hair, you wouldn't want to load your hair up with wax. It just wouldn't work. As long as you wash your hair every day, there is really no harm you can do to your hair with styling products. For males with shorter hair, I recommend wax or pomeade for that fun texture and hold.
